Waking up from a good night’s sleep, ready to take on the day, is a feeling we all strive for. Dr. Roland Gerencer is an Ear, Nose, and Throat physician for Health Specialists of New Mexico specializing in Inspire implants. Monday, Dr. Gerencer explained what an Inspire implant is and who qualifies for it.
“It’s a pacemaker for your tongue,” said Dr. Gerencer. The Inspire implant delivers pulses that move your tongue out of the way each time you take a breath. This helps keep your airway open while you sleep soundly. No mask or hose is required.
The right candidates for this are people who have “predominantly obstructive sleep apnea who have moderate-severe disease. We then look at objective criteria such as the apnea-hypopnea index. We look at the patient’s basic body size. The final qualification is to make sure it’s actually the tongue causing the obstruction,” said Dr. Gerencer.
Dr. Gerencer has also been recognized as a Physician of Excellence by the Inspire Institute Excellence Committee. The Inspire Excellence Program recognizes physicians who demonstrate their commitment to delivering an exceptional patient experience.
